Material Selection for Cold Formed Fasteners

Material selection must satisfy both manufacturing and final application requirements. A candidate material may offer the desired final properties but create forming, tooling, heat-treatment, surface-treatment, or supply constraints. The correct choice is therefore made with the drawing, forming sequence, downstream processes, and validation plan—not from a material name alone.

Five material questions to answer

  • Can the material move through the required forming stages without unacceptable damage risk?
  • What final mechanical and application performance is required?
  • Will heat treatment be required, and how does it affect the sequence?
  • What surface treatment or plating is needed for the application?
  • Is the material condition and supply route compatible with controlled production?

Material selection is linked to geometry

A material cannot be evaluated independently from the part. Large section changes, demanding head shapes, sharp transitions, undercuts, and multi-stage deformation affect how much formability margin the process needs.

If the geometry and material combination creates risk, the engineering response may involve geometry optimization, a revised forming sequence, limited secondary machining, a different material condition, or another process route.
