How OEM Engineers Should Evaluate a Custom Fastener Manufacturer
OEM teams should evaluate more than whether a supplier can quote the drawing. A qualified review connects engineering, manufacturing feasibility, tooling, secondary operations, quality systems, validation, communication, change control, and production support. Claims about location, capacity, tolerances, lead time, or customer experience should be supported by current evidence.
Evaluate engineering before price comparison
- Does the supplier ask how the fastener functions in the assembly?
- Can the team explain forming feasibility and tooling constraints?
- Are critical tolerances separated from non-critical requirements?
- Can secondary operations, treatment, finishing, and inspection be planned as one route?
- Are open questions documented before tooling?

Build an RFQ that supports a useful answer
A complete RFQ reduces the chance that competing quotes are based on different assumptions. Include the latest revision, application context, expected demand, material and finish direction, critical characteristics, validation requirements, packaging needs, and project stage.
If a requirement is unknown, label it as open. Do not force every supplier to invent a value for MOQ, lead time, capability range, or validation scope.
