Custom Fastener Design Checklist: What to Include Before Requesting a Quote

A useful custom fastener RFQ explains what the part must do, not only what it looks like. The latest drawing, mating interfaces, material and process direction, quantity context, critical features, validation requirements, and project stage help the manufacturer identify risks before tooling and provide a quote based on shared assumptions.

Core RFQ package

InputWhy it matters
Drawing and revisionEstablishes the controlled requirement set
Application descriptionExplains fit, assembly, loading, and environment
Mating interfacesClarifies head, shank, thread, and locating functions
Expected quantityInfluences process and tooling evaluation
Material and finish directionConnects forming, treatment, performance, and inspection
Validation / PPAP needsDefines sample and documentation planning
Project stageShows whether geometry is conceptual, prototype, or production-released

Geometry and thread checklist

  • Head or flange function and mating feature
  • Shank diameters, transitions, shoulders, and undercuts
  • Thread form, engagement, usable length, runout, and mating part
  • Bores, recesses, drive features, or secondary-machined surfaces
  • Features that prevent rotation or control installation
  • Critical datums and tolerance relationships

State what is open to DFM

If geometry, material, tolerance, or process may be optimized, identify that freedom explicitly. If a feature is frozen because it has already been validated in the assembly, explain that constraint as well.

This distinction lets the supplier focus DFM proposals on areas where change is possible without treating mandatory requirements as suggestions.

Avoid quote assumptions

  • Do not ask the supplier to infer material from appearance.
  • Do not omit finish or treatment when it affects the application.
  • Do not treat prototype quantity as the full production forecast.
  • Do not assume a PPAP package or inspection document without defining it.
  • Do not send conflicting revisions without identifying the active file.
FAQ

Questions About This Topic

Direct answers for engineers and procurement teams evaluating a custom manufacturing project.

Can we request a quote before the drawing is final?

Yes. Identify the project as conceptual and clearly separate fixed requirements from open design questions.

Should annual volume be exact?

Provide the best current planning range or context, and label uncertainty. Do not invent a committed quantity.

How can we send a drawing if the form has no upload?

Submit the initial inquiry and Eversteel Global can coordinate an appropriate secure review method afterward.
